The merits of Nikolai Petrovich Rumyantsev (1754-1826), a politician, diplomat and patriotic statesman who served in key posts in the ruling cabinet of Alexander I, have almost no place left on the pages of the political history of Russia. But this rich, brilliantly educated nobleman sought to save the country from bloodshed and ruin, concluding important international treaties, tried to overcome economic backwardness, developing trade, laying waterways, building cities... At the same time, the spiritual basis of Rumyantsev’s daily life was educational activities. He was known as an outstanding philanthropist, collector of books and monuments of Slavic culture. His collections formed the basis of the Rumyantsev and other museums.
