The setting of his new novel “Lenin’s Former” is set in 2019, both prosperous and troubling. Provincial town of Chupov. On the outskirts, a giant regional landfill is rapidly growing, and the head is being removed for bribes. A simple official, Daniil Mitrofanov, his wife Lena and their daughter Sasha are a prosperous family. But overnight the established mechanism breaks down. All life turns out to be the former, and even the childhood apartment is “formerly Lenin”. We probably need to start all over again, but to do this we need to defeat apathy, ourselves and... the landfill.
