From the plateaus smoothed by the winds, from the river valleys caught in liana nets, along paths and off-roads, on foot and on mules, alone and in families, the northerners of the Tigre and the southerners of the Sidama, the Hararis from Harar and its environs, the Amharas, the most numerous in Ethiopia, came here, and people from the Hamir tribe, probably the smallest in the country... A multilingual conversation sounded near the walls of the hospital - sometimes rich in vowels, smooth, like the swaying of grass in pastures, sometimes wildly exclamatory, like a loud mountain stream, sometimes dull, guttural, as if coming from the stuffy gorges. And the outfits, and morals, and habits - much was different among the patients of Russian doctors, but the expression in the eyes was the same - trusting and grateful. Three thousand, and sometimes more, came every day to this street of Addis Ababa, which is now called the street of Russia . ..."
