"The Federalist Papers" (The Federalist) is a collection of political essays written by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison under the pseudonym Publius. Published in 1788, the book is considered one of the most important documents in the history of American politics. In their writings, the authors argue the merits of a republican form of government over a monarchical and dictatorial one, and discuss the structure and functions of the federal government in the United States. The Federalist is an important source of information about the founding and development of the US Constitution, as well as about the ideas that underlie American democracy.
