"The Old Bachelor" is a comedy by the English playwright William Congreve. This play was first staged in 1693 and impressed the audience with the frankness of its storyline and the irony present in the dialogues of the characters. The main character, Lavender, is a typical representative of an old bachelor who feels like an important figure in the world, but is actually the subject of humorous innuendos and devious schemes of other characters. The open face of Lavender's fakeness and narcissism makes this comedy poignant and satirical. Seemingly innocent vicissitudes, but in this play they reveal deep human passions, ambitions and weaknesses, which makes it still relevant for the modern reader.
