After the death of their mother and grandmother, caring for their brother and sister fell on the shoulders of their older sister Isma. She pushed her dreams aside, forgot about her ambitions and devoted herself to Anika and Parviz. And so they grew up, and each went their own way. Isma is free and ready to return to her university career. But concern for my brother and sister did not disappear. Anika is eccentric and too beautiful. But Parviz chose the dark path - he disappeared in the haze of the Middle East, trying to understand their jihadist father. Isma, Anika, Parviz and the rest of the heroes of the novel will face a difficult choice from which they cannot escape. What is stronger: blood ties or love ties? What is more important: mercy or loyalty to the law? Kamila Shamsi's novel is a modern version of Sophocles' Antigone. An ancient tragedy unfolds in the scenery of our days, but the strength of human feelings has not weakened since the time of Sophocles. The book was nominated for the 2017 Booker Prize and won the Women's Prize for Fiction in 2018.
