Let faith in God guide all our undertakings and let good hope accompany it, so that through faith we can strengthen our spiritual strength, and through good hope we can arouse in ourselves zeal for good. For the human undertaking in the consideration of good will not be accomplished without help from above, and the highest grace will not descend on one who has not made any effort about it. On the contrary, in the practice of virtue both must be combined—both human diligence and help coming from above by faith. All actions must be guided by prudence. For without prudence, everything that is apparently beautiful turns into vice through inopportuneness and failure to observe the measure. And when reason and prudence determine the time and measure of benefits, then both those who give and those who receive these benefits receive amazing benefits from their use. In everything good that we have done, the soul should attribute the reasons for success in the matter to the Lord, without thinking in the least that it She succeeded in anything good through her own strength. For such a disposition usually produces humility in us. And humility is the treasure keeper of virtues.
