The attention of readers is presented to the work of the famous historian, corresponding member of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences Evgeniy Frantsevich Shmurlo (1853-1934). His book was published in Prague in 1929; it has long become a bibliographic rarity, and therefore turned out to be inaccessible to readers. Meanwhile, even today it remains an original study of Voltaire’s work on “The History of the Russian Empire under Peter the Great.” Of particular value are the documentary appendices to the book, which provide an opportunity to penetrate Voltaire’s creative laboratory and clarify the attitude of critics, primarily M. V. Lomonosov and G. F. Miller, to his work. The publication of E. F. Shmurlo’s work is preceded by an introductory article, which gives a historiographical assessment of his works on the Peter the Great era. The republication of E. F. Shmurlo’s book in 1929, as well as the comprehension of his scientific research on the Petrine theme, will undoubtedly contribute to the further study of iconic 18th century figures – Peter I and Voltaire, as well as the history of Russian-French cultural interaction. The book is intended for researchers, graduate and university students and anyone interested in Peter the Great, the Age of Enlightenment and Russian-French relations. The publishing layout of the book is saved in PDF A4 format.< /p>
