Noting Dostoevsky's personal commitment to Russian Orthodoxy, Jones argues that one can understand the writer's fictional world only by appreciating the polyphony of the most diverse religious experiences reflected in the works - from devout faith to radical unbelief. As a novelist, Dostoevsky disdained outward manifestations of religiosity and showed that a person’s path to “hosanna” must pass through the “crucible of doubts.” Malcolm W. Jones is Emeritus Professor of Russian at the University of Nottingham (UK), one of the founders and honorary president of the International Society Dostoevsky. Author of books and articles about Dostoevsky, some of which are already available in Russian: in particular, “Dostoevsky after Bakhtin,” published in 1998.
